God's Hall of Fame Print E-mail

by: Bishop Samuel Smith

There is a famine in the land today for the Word of God. Why? Because the Word is not preached! Men of passion, purpose and power are a vanishing breed. I have composed the following article containing the statements of many of God’s Hall of Fame. Men who were not always popular in their lifetimes; but they left an indelible mark upon the Body of Christ. Most of these men lie buried in unmarked graves, known only to God. They would never make the grade on most Gospel TV networks in our day, nor would they be comfortable in many of the pulpits of the 21st century’s mega-churches; but they fulfill the scripture: “…being dead yet speaketh.” Hebrews 11:4

“If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our bodies. If they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees. Let no one go there unwarned and unprayed for.” Charles Spurgeon

“The new wine of revival will shatter the old wineskins of formality.” Leonard Ravenhill

“It doesn’t take an extraordinary person, just devotion to our extra-ordinary God to live an extraordinary life.” Unknown

“The shortest distance between a problem and the solution is the distance between your knees and the floor.” Anonymous

“In the Irish Revival of 1859, people became so weak that they could not get back to their homes. Men and women would fall by the wayside and would be found hours later pleading with God to save their souls. They felt that they were slipping into hell and that nothing else in life mattered but to get right with God… to them eternity meant everything. Nothing else was of any consequence. They felt that if God did not have mercy on them and save them, they were doomed for all time to come.” Oswald J. Smith

“We fear men so much, because we fear God so little. One fear cures another.” William Gurnall

“Making heaven on earth is our business.” William Booth

“If your faith can’t be tested, it can’t be trusted.” Unknown

“Is what you’re living for worth Christ dying for?” - Epitaph of Leonard Ravenhill

“Beware of prayerless tears and beware of tearless prayers.” Unknown

“Pray hardest when it is hardest to pray.” Charles H. Brent

“Your character is who you are when no one but God is watching you.” Unknown

“Could a mariner sit idle if he heard the drowning cry? Could a doctor sit in comfort and just let his patients die? Could a fireman sit idle, let men burn and give no hand? Can you sit at ease in Zion with the world around you DAMNED?” Leonard Ravenhill

“And when I am dying, how happy I’ll be, if the lamp of my life has been burned out for Thee.”
Author Unknown

“Preach abroad…it is the cooping yourselves up in rooms that has dampened the work of God, which never was and never will be carried out to any purpose without going into the highways and hedges and compelling men and women to come in.” Jonathan Edwards

“Give yourselves to prayer and the ministry of the Word. If you do not pray, God will probably lay you aside from your ministry, as He did me, to teach you to pray.”
Robert Murray McCheyne

“Let me burn out for God. After all, whatever God may appoint, prayer is the great thing. Oh, that I might be a man of prayer!”
Henry Martyn

“O Brother, pray; in spite of Satan, pray; spend hours in prayer; rather neglect friends than not pray; rather fast and lose breakfast, dinner, tea, and supper- and sleep too-than not pray. And we must not talk about prayer, we must pray in right earnest. The Lord is near. He comes softly while the virgins slumber.”
Andrew Bonar

“The one concern of the devil is to keep Christians from praying. He fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless work and prayerless religion. He laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but trembles when we pray.” Samuel Chadwick

“The greatest hindrance to effective prayer is sin. Satan’s greatest goal is to keep us from our knees.”
Dick Eastman

“The coming revival must begin with a great revival of prayer. It is in the closet, with the door shut, that the sound of abundance of rain will first be heard.”
Andrew Murray
“If I should neglect prayer but a single day, I should lose a great deal of the fire of faith.”
Martin Luther

“He only can truly pray who is all aglow for holiness, for God, and for heaven.”- E. M. Bounds

“The price of prayerlessness far exceeds the price of prayer.”
Selected

“The prayer of faith is the only power in the universe to which the Great Jehovah yields.”
Robert Hall

“If the spirit of prayer departs, it is a sure indication of a backslidden heart, for while the first love of a Christian continues he is sure to be drawn by the Holy Spirit to wrestle much in prayer.”
Charles G. Finney

“Prayerlessness is sin.”
Harold Lindsell

“All hindrance to prayer arises from ignorance of the teaching of God’s Holy Word on the life of holiness He has planned for all His children or from an unwillingness to consecrate ourselves fully to Him.” The Kneeling Christian

“The mightiest prayers are often those drenched with the Word of God.” Herbert Lockyer

“Our greatest victories are won on our knees and with empty stomachs.” Julio C Ruibal

“All earthly things with earth will pass away; Prayer grasps eternity. Then pray, always pray!”
E. H. Bickersteth

“True prayer is a lonely business.”-Samuel Chadwick

“Every work of God can be traced to some kneeling form.”
D. L. Moody

“We think of prayer as a preparation for work, or a calm after having done work, whereas prayer is the essential work. It is the supreme activity of everything that is noblest in our personality.”- Oswald Chambers

“Too busy; O forgive, Dear Lord that I should ever be, too much engrossed in earthly tasks, to spend an hour with thee.”
A. B. Christiansen

“O let the place of secret prayer become to me the most beloved spot on earth.”-Andrew Murray

“The secret of praying is praying in secret.” Leonard Ravenhill

“Prayer itself is an art which only the Holy Ghost can teach us. He is the giver of all prayer. Pray for prayer-pray till you can pray.”
Charles Haddon Spurgeon
