Faith of our Fathers Print E-mail

by: Bishop Samuel Smith

This article first appeared in Bishop Smith's prophecy magazine, 'Awareness' in 1985, in response to the movement then to discredit the Christian heritage of the United States.

In view of recent events, the furor over the removal of the Ten Commandments monument in Alabama to the growing attack against anything Christian and moral in our culture; this article "Faith of our Fathers," needs to be required reading by all concerned Americans, and distributed as widely as possible.

Mankind is in no position today to discard the Bible! I’m well aware there are multitudes who want to: the atheists, communists, far left, pseudo-intellectuals, and new moralists. Their blind counterparts have been present in every age, starting in the Garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve decided that they knew better than God.

History repeats itself! Throughout the history of man, the civilizations that built upon the twin pillars of morality and righteousness, prospered; when those pillars crumbled, then those nations perished. Consider for example: Babylon, Ninevah, the Golden Grecian Era, and the Roman Empire. Thus, the scripture is fulfilled, “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34)

The United States of America was founded by men and women who loved, trusted and believed in the “Supreme Being.” The government they established; the judicial system they adopted; the literature they wrote; and the music they composed, all were interlaced with references to “God.” On this foundation was built the greatest nation the world has ever known.

In a day such as ours, when the “old landmarks” are under attack as being “worn” and “out of date,” let us examine the sayings, that express the “faith” of our “Founding Fathers.”

George Washington, Revolutionary War General and First President: “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.”

John Quincy Adams, Sixth President: “So great is my veneration for the Bible that the earlier my children begin to read it, the more confident will be my hope that they will prove useful citizens of their country and respectable members of society. I have for many years made it a practice to read though the Bible once every year.

Patrick Henry, distinguished statesman at the time of the American Revolution: “The Bible is worth all other books which have been printed.”

Andrew Jackson, Seventh President: “That book, sir, is the rock on which our republic rests.”

Horace Greely, prominent American newspaper publisher: “it is impossible to enslave mentally or socially a Bible-reading people. The principles of the Bible are the groundwork of human freedom.”

W.H. Seward, U.S. Secretary of State during the Civil War: “The whole hope of human progress is suspended on the ever-growing influence of the Bible.”

Daniel Webster, one of the ablest lawyers and statesmen of his time: “If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering, but if we, in our prosperity neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity.”

Abraham Lincoln, Sixteenth President: “I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man. All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated to us through this book.”

U.S. Grant, Union General and Eighteenth President: “The Bible is the sheet-anchor of our liberties.”

Having considered the quotations of only a few of the many “God-believing” founders of our country, it is easy to see that Americans have a heritage. Thus, the “Pledge to the Flag,” states, “one nation under God.”

A noted European statesman around the turn of the century declared, “The United States of America is great because it trusts God; when it ceases to trust God, it will no longer be great.” His predication appears to be well on its way towards fulfillment.

In this day of moral manipulation and spiritual stagnation, with world crisis; witchcraft, murder, thievery, abortion, adultery and homosexuality on the increase, the last thing America can afford to ignore is the Bible. As the compass is to a ship in a stormy sea, so is the Word of God to man in times like these.

A revival of morality, a renewal of the national spirit and a return to God is the hope of America! This was the “Faith of our Fathers,” it worked for them, it will work for us!

Remember, the Lord said, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (II Chronicles 7:14)
